Media for Dialogue (M4D)

This cross-border media campaign in Eastern DRC (North and South Kivu), and the border regions of Rwanda and Burundi, focuses on forced and spontaneous migration in the region.

Through the Kumbuka Kesho radio drama, radio magazines and debates (Maoni Yako) and online communication outlets, the programme seeks to tackle the origins of identity group violence from a historic perspective, as well as from the actual issues of stability in the region. The program facilitates discussions with stakeholders, and advocates potential solutions.

Media 4 Dialogue is a media project that fights against manipulation of identities in the Great Lakes region

For over 100 years, this region has known waves of migrations and forced or spontaneous movements of persons of different identities. The cohabitation between communities, identities and nationalities at cross-border level has not always been easy. There’s mistrust and tensions come up regularly, which sometimes lead to conflicts between identity groups. Prejudices and stereotypes are often used on the basis of identities (defined on ethnicity or nationality), which leads to dangerous or hate speech expressions. On top of it, the manipulation of these identities sometimes incites to violence. A wrong understanding of history, with absence of dialogue and lack of constructive relation with other identity groups is often the reason why insecurity remains in the region.
